Stanley Donwood's solo show at Outsiders gallery in London, which opened yesterday, offers a first glimpse of some of the artwork he's created for the new Radiohead album, The King of Limbs...

"There's three new screenprints here and a fucking great big drawing," he says. "This is all from the work that's to do with the record." The artworks are inspired by nature, Donwood goes onto explain, and the northern European heritage of fairy tales and myths based around forests and woods. "It's very much about natural forms. I'd heard something about the northern European imagination, in the sense of all our fairy stories and mythical creatures. They all come from the woods - Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel & Gretel...we've got all these stories and myths.

"Me and Thom were working on these ideas of strange, multi-limbed creatures that are neither malevolent or benevolent, they're simply there, part of the living spirit of the forest. That's come through into all of the work."

For the main cover artwork, he worked in oil for the first time. "It's really, really hard," he says of the medium. "I've only painted with acrylic before, which is bascially coloured mud that dries really quickly. It's very forgiving, but oil paint isn't really. It doesn't dry at all quickly. Eventually, after a lot of disappointment I figured out how to use it. I use it in conjunction with Halfords spray paint, which is the magic ingredient."

Donwood documented the development of the paintings with a high-definition camera, and the resulting images are used on the cover. "I was photographing them throughout the stages, because it takes so bloody long to do them," he says. "Then with these huge digital images, where you can see the weave of the canvas and every brush mark, you can make quite incredible layered pictures."

The special edition is centred around a newspaper Donwood has created. "The last one, In Rainbows, was like a coffee table book. It was this big thing - I felt quite sure that with determination you could probably beat someone to death with it, it was very heavy and hard. So I wanted to do something that was completely different for this. Also, the other thing was the sense of the music not coming to a halt - it was almost like this was kind of a report on its current status. What I like about newspaper is its ephemeral nature, I like the way the paper goes yellow and brittle when you leave it out in the sunlight.

"I wanted to do this thing like a really annoying Sunday paper," he continues, "you know when you buy the paper and all this crap falls out? I wanted to do something really annoying with all these crappy bits of floppy, glossy paper. I was going to do Hoover adverts and get the band to pose with a Hoover, and all that kind of thing. Which was a really dumb idea… so I didn’t do it. It would have been funny, but would have probably dented some reputation they might have… So it evolved into something else."

In addition, the Newspaper Album will feature 625 tiny pieces of artwork, though Donwood refuses to be drawn on what these might be. "I'll keep that as a mystery," he says. "They’re sort of attached to each other but not quite – they kind of are and kind of aren’t. As soon as anyone sees it they’ll know exactly what I’m talking about."

A la lecture de ces explications, j'ai bien peur que le coup du newspaper album ne concerne en fait que 'l'emballage' de la box, et non pas d'un nouveau mode de distribution de morceaux.

ça ne me rassure pas des masses, j'ai un peu peur d'avoir droit à un objet relativement cheap comparé à la discbox précédente.
j'espère être surpris d'agréable manière.

Pour IR il avait signalé un CD2 (pour ça que je l'avais acheté) - Je pense que s'il y avait des + musiques cela aurait été mentionné

Non il y doit y avoir un truc en plus, la façon dont il le décrit fait penser à ça forcément mais il ajoute "As soon as anyone sees it they’ll know exactly what I’m talking about." il y a un twist je pense, un truc auquel on ne peut s'attendre.

Reprenant notre sport favori, la supputation au long cours, nous nous demandons tous ce que peut bien être un « newspaper album »...Stanley, qui présente ses dernières réalisations dans une galerie londonienne jusqu’au 5 mars, a vendu la mêche.

Il confirme d’abord que le travail qu’il a fait sur TKOL est lié à l’exploration des traditions européennes des contes de fées et des mythes, dans lesquels bois et forêts sont centraux : Petit Chaperon Rouge et Belle au Bois dormant, Hansel et Gretel, etc : « Thom et moi, nous avons travaillé sur l’idée de ces étranges créatures aux multiples membres qui ne sont ni bienveillantes ni malveillantes, simplement là, comme une forme de l’esprit vivant de la forêt. C’est ce qui transparaît à travers tout notre travail. »

Donwood a travaillé au même rythme que le groupe sur l’album, artwork et musique entrant petit à petit en interaction. Et pour la 1re fois, il a utilisé de la peinture à l’huile et non de l’acrylique. Il a utilisé également des photos en haute définition, le résultat étant produit avec des images digitales permettant de multiplier les couches.

L’édition spéciale (de l’album) est centrée autour d’un journal que Donwwod a créé : « pour In Rainbows, le modèle c’était un guéridon de café, mais c’était volumineux et lourd. Je voulais faire quelque chose de très différent. Et puis de même qu’il n’y avait pas de pause dans la musique, l’artwork devait refléter ça aussi. Ce que j’aime dans l’idée de « journal » , c’est sa nature éphémère, j’aime la manière dont le papier jaunit et craque si vous le laissez au soleil. Je voulais l’éditer comme ces journaux du dimanche, si embêtants, vous savez, vous achetez un journal et tout le fatras qui va avec tombe par terre...J’avais même envie de faire des publicités pour électroménager où j’aurais fait poser le groupe...C’était un peu bête...j’ai abandonné l’idée...ça aurait été amusant mais ça aurait sans doute écorné leur réputation...c’est devenu autre chose. »

Donwood a refusé en revanche de révéler ce que pouvaient bien être ces 625 petits morceaux d’artwork qui seront dans le paquet : « je garde le secret : les morceaux ont des liens entre eux, mais pas tout à fait...enfin dès qu’on les voit, on comprend ce que c’est. »

c'est assez mal traduit je pense, en anglais, j'avais juste compris qu'il s'agissait d'un objet très massif, et stanley ajoutait qu'il était sur qu'on aurait pu tuer quelqu'un avec.
